Coming Back to God After Church Hurt

This week I’ve seen so many people turning back to God. Some are walking into a church for the first time in years. Some are dusting off a Bible that’s been sitting unopened on the shelf. Some are whispering a quiet prayer in the car because they don’t even know where to start.

And honestly? It’s beautiful.

Now let’s be real: all death is tragic. None of us would ever wish for loss to be the reason hearts start searching for God again. But the ripple effect? Souls waking up, eyes turning upward, spirits beginning to soften? That’s something to be grateful for.

But I want to talk to you the one who’s circling the edges of faith again. Maybe you’ve been hurt by church before. Maybe you’ve been shamed, manipulated, dismissed, or broken by people who were supposed to represent God. Let’s name that for what it is: trauma.

And here’s the good news trauma heals.

Your body was designed to heal. Not just physically, but spiritually. Scripture says your body is the temple of the Spirit. That means God chose to dwell in you. The kingdom of heaven isn’t some faraway place it’s within.

So where do you even start?

👉 Don’t open Genesis first. It’s too heavy up front.

👉 Start with the words of Christ Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

👉 Read about Jesus. Learn His voice. Feel His presence.

And here’s the part many skip: learn to connect with God through your own body.

Your body is a discernment tool. It’s wired to feel what is aligned with Truth and what isn’t. But if you’re carrying unhealed trauma, that compass can feel broken at first. That’s why step one isn’t memorizing verses or checking boxes on a “good Christian” list.

Step one is this: create a relationship with the Holy Spirit inside your body.

Talk to Him. Ask questions. Listen for answers. Scripture promises us if you ask, you will receive. It’s not about religious performance. It’s about intimacy. Dialogue. A back-and-forth conversation with the One who loves you most.

So if you’re stepping back toward God—whether that’s walking into church this weekend, cracking open the Gospels, or simply whispering a prayer—know this:

You don’t need to perform. You just need to connect.

Because God’s already inside of you, waiting for the conversation to begin.
